LAUGHING GAS

LAUGHING GAS - THE GENTLE METHOD TO TREAT PATIENTS PAINLESS AND COMFORTABLE

For patients with dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex, treatment under the influence of nitrous oxide is recommended due to its positive properties. The dosage of the gas can be controlled flexibly so that nitrous oxide sedation is possible for all dental procedures from professional tooth cleaning to surgical treatments.

WHAT IS LAUGHING GAS

What actually is nitrous oxide, what properties does it have and what does it look like?

Laughing gas is an invisible, odorless and slightly sweet-tasting substance – in other words, a gas. Since nitrous oxide can be absorbed very quickly by the body but not metabolized, no residues remain in the body after treatment.

There are hardly any known side effects of nitrous oxide, only temporary dizziness can occur in case of an overdose, however inhaling oxygen counteracts this immediately.

How does nitrous oxide work in the body?

Before treatment, the patient is fitted with a nasal mask made of silicone, which is connected to a nitrous oxide device. This allows treatment to be carried out in the mouth without any problems or complications, while the patient breathes in and out through the nose.  The nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose, absorbed by the lungs and takes effect after only four to five minutes. The treatment starts with oxygen and ends with it. During the procedure, the patient is monitored with a pulse oximeter. This simultaneously measures the oxygen saturation and the pulse.

After the start of the treatment, the nitrous oxide concentration is steadily increased so that the patient slowly switches off, but remains responsive at all times. Laughing gas noticeably and proven suppresses the patient’s anxiety and sense of pain. Breathing it in puts the body into a state of relaxation and decoupling from reality takes place. Patients feel “light” and “carefree”. After the procedure, the effect of the gas subsides completely and on its own after five to ten minutes, so that the patient can leave the practice independently and participate in everyday life without restrictions.

For whom is nitrous oxide treatment suitable?

Laughing gas sedation is particularly suitable for patients who have a great fear of dental treatment. Patients with a strong gag reflex also benefit from treatment under the influence of nitrous oxide. The age of the patient does not matter, even children who suffer from dental anxiety can be sedated through the use of nitrous oxide.

Due to the feeling of indifference, anxiety patients who are sedated by nitrous oxide no longer associate a visit to the dentist with negative experiences. Allergy sufferers can also enjoy nitrous oxide treatment without restriction, as allergies are not known to date.

If you are one of the patients listed below, you should discuss this with your dentist before your treatment with nitrous oxide
